The Challenge That Started It All: A Mom’s Path to Becoming a Reading Tutor

I first encountered dyslexia when our daughter was diagnosed. As a homeschooling mom I knew that there was something making reading and learning more of a challenge for her than it had been for her older siblings. Fortunately the Freemasons had a learning center nearby and offered free tutoring using an Orton Gillingham program. She completed two years with them and it transformed her educational experience.

Some of the things which were clues that something was different about how our youngest learned was the inconsistency of her progress and her lack of interest. She’d have a great day, remembering the letters or sounds we’ve been practicing. The next day it was as if the same letters or sounds were brand new. She’d struggle. I’d lose patience. We’d both be frustrated and confused. This led her to avoid ‘bookwork’. When we were doing oral practice or dictations, it was easier and hands-on activities and experiments were her favorite way to learn.

As each of our 4 kids graduated, I began to consider what I might do after finishing homeschooling. Becoming a reading specialist was one of my favorite options. Great Leaps has allowed me to help kids build solid reading skills. I can help them make the transition from a reluctant reader/learner to a confident student who knows they can learn. I can help others in the same way my daughter was helped.
