Phonemic Awareness

Our tutors have access to and training in the Emergent Reader program covering all the steps of phonological awareness, including phonemic and morphemic awareness. Great Leaps was among the first interventions to incorporate this as an essential element for emergent readers.

Phonics

Great Leaps Reading utilizes phonics as an integral tool in the teaching and intervention of literacy. One third of the program is devoted to the development of strong phonics through direct instruction with timed exercises, teaching to mastery.

Fluency

We have been widely acknowledged as an innovative leader in fluency development. Using the widely research based read/reread method, working from high frequency phrases to age appropriate, leveled stories, step-by-step students are led to independent reading.

Vocabulary

Great Leaps not only enhances vocabulary through our Stories section but also works regularly on vocabulary development in the comprehension component at the end of each story. Our students are led to use new words; you don't own a word until you can use that word in conversation.

Comprehension

Vocabulary and world knowledge, often victims of the knowledge gap, are developed with individualized Depth of Knowledge questions chosen by the tutor. Questions and instruction are designed to help students make text to text, and text to self/real world relationships. Once students acquire sufficient levels of fluency, students work on retelling each story in their own words and draw inferences about characters and actions that extend beyond the story.
